Acts chapter 2 opens with perhaps the most groundbreaking event in church history—that first day of Pentecost following Jesus’ resurrection—and closes with a description of the day-to-day life of the earliest believers. One is spectacular, featuring sights, sounds, and languages unlike anything those present had ever experienced. The other is comparatively routine: teaching, fellowship, eating together, praying, and sharing as anyone had need. Yet both realities speak to the nature of how God works in and through his people.
God sometimes works in spectacular fashion (think of Peter’s Pentecost sermon that pointed 3,000 to Christ), but other times he matures people slowly through practical kindness and fellowship. The simple act of breaking bread and extending grace can profoundly change a life. As you read this, Feed the Hunger staff and Board members are gathering with partners from nine countries to do much as the early church did. They will be devoting themselves “to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer” (Acts 2:42) with one goal—to glorify the Lord even more in their ministries, churches, and families.
As you pray for these needs this week, consider how the seemingly simplest acts can be used by God to draw unbelievers to himself and strengthen those who are already his children. May the Lord bless you this week with the opportunity to fellowship with someone who needs that special touch!
