Pack-a-thon
What is a Pack-a-thon?
A Pack-a-thon is a multi-day food packing event in which volunteers package fully nutritious meals for children in Feed the Hunger programs around the world. They are facilitated by Feed the Hunger and Feed My Starving Children, our partnering organization. A Pack-a-thon is made up of teams of churches, community organizations, businesses, and individual volunteers that give money and time to feed hungry children, committing to a two-hour packing shift.
What is the relationship between Feed the Hunger and Feed My Starving Children?
Feed the Hunger has worked with Feed My Starving Children for years in the distribution of the meal packets. Feed My Starving Children provides the food materials and packing equipment to allow for volunteers to package the food in a clean and efficient manner. From there, Feed the Hunger works with its existing network of national partners in Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean to distribute the meals to children in our programs.
Why am I strongly encouraged to contribute financially?
There is a real cost of producing, shipping, and distributing the food to our Feed the Hunger programs. It is actually your volunteering that allows for these costs to stay so low. For 25 cents a serving, we are able go from bulk food materials to a warm rice meal on the plate of a hungry child. You will be crucial to the procurement of these materials and the labor involved before their distribution, and we ask that you help us cover the associated costs.
Are there age limits for volunteers?
Yes. Due to national requirements, volunteers must be in the 3rd grade or older to participate. We ask that for full groups of young volunteers, the following minimum student to adult ratios exist. (Elementary school, 3:1) (Middle School, 4:1) (High School, 5:1)
Can we participate without making a contribution?
Teams that are able to contribute financially will have the first opportunity to secure a time slot for their shift. As the event reaches capacity, the possibility of packing without fundraising is lowered and your shift may be moved to a waiting list.
What if my team is struggling to raise the required funds for our shift?
While we ask that each team provide funds for their shift, raising the full amount is not always easy. If you are unable to raise the full amount for your shift there are several options. You can contact Feed the Hunger for our “Fundraising Ideas” list, consider corporate partnering options, or combine with another group or individuals to fill out your team.
